Big Horn 24 Long Gun Electronic Lock Safe Review

Gun Safe Summary: The Bighorn 24 Gun Safe is an affordable and quality first gun safe for a gun owner. It is one of the least expensive around. It has all the standard features you would expect in a reliable security container and is well constructed. What is surprising is that Bighorn has managed to make a light and small safe that can hold up to 24 long guns. The interior is also customizable with movable shelves and the overall construction is solid. Exterior hinge placement allows for the door to be swung open a full 180 degrees for ease of access and inset side bolts mean that even if the lock is removed, the door cannot be opened. There are some perks to this economy gun safe that will surprise you too, a few things that some of the bigger safes don’t include.

Size and where it fits: The Bighorn 24 gun safe is a size for a small office, apartment or home. It weighs just under 500 lbs. which means it does not require heavily supported floors. The exterior measures 59”H by 29”W by 20”D. Even when you add on the additional 3-inches of depth needed for the handle, the Bighorn 24 still has a profile slimmer than most other safes. The width allows for transfer through house doors, hallways and can be placed inside single closets with ease. The height is standard, so it can fit most all the regular sport and hunting long guns around. The hinges do allow for a full 180 degree swing to ease full access to the interior, depending on how you plan on using the gun safe – as armory or security storage – this may be the only special consideration in placement. To open the door fully you will need at least 3 feet of clear space to the side of the safe.

What it’s made of: The Bighorn 24 gun safe is made from solid 12 gauge steel with an additional 1.5” composite layer on the door and supporting fire insulation throughout the structure. The door, with the composite addition, has a penetration thickness of 4.75 inches. It comes with an inset manual lock and 3 point handle but is also available with a UL listed electronic lock. The locks are protected by 3 layer armor plating. The fire insulation is rated for 30 minutes at 1200 degrees and the finish on the exterior is a powder coating. The hinges are externally set and heavy duty. The locking structure includes 8 heavy duty bolts and has a spring loaded re-locker built in to cover should the lock be damaged or breached. On the inside of the door is a cloth organizer and the interior is also covered in auto grade fabric to protect your long guns.

Why this Gun Safe is good: The Bighorn 24 gun safe that makes it better for a first time owner is it meets or exceeds the California Department of Justice standards for a gun safe. This is a qualification that many gun safes meet, but may not list on their specifications and that can prove a pitfall should anything happen. By being able to demonstrate that the gun safe you bought met standards means you will not be held accountable for anything that happens should security be breached. The worry about theft from the safe is something that is not realistic, this is a solidly made and secure small safe. This is a UL certified RSC gun safe and there is nothing about it that is weak, poorly made or easy to bypass.

Conclusion: The Bighorn 24 gun safe is a solid choice for affordable security for your weapons. It may not be the choice if there is a high risk of fire in the building your long guns are kept. This, and other considerations, should be a part of your decision making in purchasing a gun safe.
